The University of San Francisco held an information session promoting the expensive sports management masters program which has many faculty and alumni working in the sports industry, said a representative yesterday evening on the college campus.

“I didn’t think about the implications of the financial decision” said Drew Roberts (37), who received the master’s degree and is still paying off his student loans from the program which today costs $46,620 a year.

According to Roberts most students want to be a general manager or agent, however the majority end up in marketing, operations, or sales. 28% of graduates work for college sports programs and 19% work for professional teams, said Rodgers.

“The sports industry is notorious for long hours, weekends, and the pay is not so great” Roberts said. The program’s reputation gets students internships with sports businesses, such as the San Francisco Giants who currently employ 40 workers from USF, according to Roberts.

One of the two audience members at the presentation asked if students may transfer between the San Francisco and Orange County campuses during the 23 month program. Roberts said yes, commenting on the committed professors who fly between locations for the class once every week.

“We can’t give you a job but we won’t let you fall through the cracks” said Roberts. The program has an optional masters project that leads some graduates to employment with sports firms and teams, such as the 49ers, according to the presentation.
