Fictional Story-USF Student Death
USF Student Death
Written by Tara Giddings
A University of San Francisco student died yesterday in Union Square from a headlock causing a lack of oxygen to the brain, after being chased by a Macy’s security guard who accused the student of shoplifting, said the police.
The bystander, Patrick Daugherty, who chased and applied a headlock to the resisting student, Timothy Milan (19), is not being charged with a crime since the event “seemed to be a case of excusable homicide” according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s office.
The security guard reported seeing Milan stuff two sweaters down his pants but the police did not recover the sweaters.
When police arrived at the scene Daugherty released Milan who collapsed as officers attempted to cuff him. The police rushed Milan to Kaiser Hospital on Geary Avenue where hospital authorities pronounced him dead on arrival. An autopsy later determined the cause of death to be a crushed windpipe.
Milan reportedly ran from the guard, whose name police declined to release, after leaving the department store around 10 am. Three bystanders walking outside the store, including Daugherty, then joined in the pursuit, said police. Daugherty identified himself as a clarinetist with the San Francisco Chamber Ensemble.
Timothy Milan was born in Fairbanks, Alaska and lived at 1112 Huron Avenue in San Francisco, California. He worked part time at Crowley’s Oyster Bar while majoring in Theology.
