Looking for art, sunsets and nature

Looking for art, sunsets and nature
By Tara Giddings

Art is possibly the most controversial term to define, for some people it is only the works in famous museums, for some it is the finger painting of kindergartener’s, for me art is a representation of beauty. It is the use of creativity that makes someone somewhere feel something. For me personally it is a work that I connect with, that I see something in and that I can find a piece of myself in. When looking to buy art for my fictional home I don’t want something just because it is impressive or famous, and yet I’m not simply looking for a deeply personal image. I’m looking for something that I enjoy looking at, something that will being me joy and brighten my day no matter what is happening because I know it is something I will see in every mood. For me this art needs to be something I want to become a part of my home and my life, a constant, and something that brings out the best in myself.

When I first entered the rather quaint local artist gallery, City Art Cooperative Gallery, on Valencia St in San Francisco I immediately noticed the three piece sunset painting hung over the desk. As someone who always loves a good sunset I knew it was a piece I would never tire of looking at. The golden beauty of the painting was similar to some of the artist’s other pieces as well. Two small gold flowers hung on the white wall farther below, glistening with their metallic background contrasting with the orange hue of the floral painting. Another work in the collection was an image of sea turtles on the beach. Each one’s shell was shiny against the yellow grains of sand, nearly touching the foam of the waves washing towards it.

I choose these paintings because they are representations of my favorite things. Walking along the beach at sunset may be one of the most over romanticized ideas, but it is in no way overrated. To be in nature and to forget about the rest of society and simply focus on the beauty nature effortlessly creates brings me a sense of calm that nothing else does. The flowers are a reminder to appreciate the simple things and let that help you appreciate all aspects of life. Sea turtles are some of my favorite animals, bringing back the connection I feel to the ocean after growing up around water.

The painter, Carole R. Moore greeted me as I walked in, smiling she told me the artwork was hers after I complimented it. The local art galley is run by all the artists and along with putting on events such as the First Friday Art Walk each month, the artists take turns talking to the public and selling the works. All were far less expensive than a touristy San Francisco art gallery.

The three piece sunsets were $650 in total, the flowers “shy sunflower” and “small gold” were each $180 and “turtle trek” cost $750 for all three paintings. So that gets me to about $1760, giving me more money left to spend on art!

At the same gallery another artist’s work connected to me as well. Tisha Kerny’s Sunflower Garden with Butterfly was a beautiful, equally realistic and creative piece. She combined my love of sunflowers and greenery in a piece that made me feel as happy as sitting outside in the sun on a perfect day. That watercolor on rice paper cost $850. But, this was not the only work by her that I loved.

I also enjoyed two others, the first a Japanese style painting of white flowers titled “Spring Blossoms” which is watercolor on regular paper and cost $150. The second, while similar to my initial favorite differed greatly in terms of color and brushstroke, was of a sunset as well. Her piece “Golden Sunset” combined the colors of green and blue in the ocean with a slightly darker near purple hue of the sun coming out to set on a cloudy day. This painting is a bit less clear and exact but still transforms the relaxing feeling of being on the beach at dusk. The watercolor on wood cost about $125 which I think is pretty cheap considering the larger size.

Having now reached a total cost of $2885 for so many gorgeous works of art I only had a bit left to spend on my artistic adventure. Jeanne Hauser is a photographer is takes pictures of wild animals and portrays them in a beautiful manner. Her picture of a baby elephant is one I would love to have in my home. It costs $225 so my amount is $3110 which is a bit over but it had to be either over or under at this point. So this way I have more art which is always better! The elephant is one of the kindest animals which I think makes such beautiful photograph something wonderful to have.

I consider everything I fictionally purchased to be art. Each work was seen and created by an artist representing their outlook on the world. In sharing this outlook I was able to find beauty in these representations myself creating a shared human connection. For me that is what art is about and I think I succeeded in my quest.
