Tequila! Tequila! Tommy’s!

Tequila! Tequila! Tommy’s!
By Tara Giddings

Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant on Geary Street is one of the essential places for great Mexican food in San Francisco. Complete with a quality selection of tequila the bar offers one of the best margaritas in the city.

Inside the cozy bustling restaurant the friendly staff make you feel right at home with their kind attitudes and another round of drinks. Though as my friend informed me after a couple of margaritas if you let the ice melt long enough….free second drink!

Each pitcher of margaritas, costing $37, contains 8 ozs of tequila and fresh squeezed lime juice. Single margaritas cost $9 so going with a group and splitting a pitcher will let you save money and share the joy. The margaritas are made with 100% agave tequila, making them superior to margaritas that contain lower percentages of agave tequila which typically add coloring and sugar.

Tommy’s is known for their tequila, they even have Tommy’s Blue Agave Club. Fun fact, in order to be officially classified as tequila, it must be made from blue agave in the Jalisco region of Mexico. Anything made from other agave varieties or other regions is classified as mezcal, the smokier alcohol related to tequila that is quickly growing in popularity.

Of course Tommy’s has all the quality classic tequila brands and varieties. They offer Don Julio, Herradura and Patron along with many more well known and less common tequilas. The first of the varieties is Blanco also referred to as Silver or Plato, which is unaged tequila with a more subtle flavor, most commonly used in mixed drinks.

Tommy’s uses multiple varieties of tequila in just margaritas. When tequila is aged for 2 months or up to a year in an oak barrel then the tequila is Reposado. The oak barrel gives the tequila a bit darker color and a more complex flavor. For an even more flavorful taste the tequila is barrel aged for 1-3 years creating the Añejo variety.

One of my friends said “beer is more mellow than tequila” and luckily there is a great beer selection as well. They have Mexican beers ranging from the good more popular option of Carta Blanca to the rarer beers such as Bohemia.

Tommy’s food selection is equally impressive. The chips and guacamole ($15) is essential to any meal and is big enough to be a meal for one person. The nachos ($10) are a bit more average but still cheesy quality.

For main dishes the burritos ($12) are spectacular even to someone used to really good California burritos. You have a choice of beef, chicken or pork cooked with green peppers, onion and tomato sauce. Each is served with rice, beans, salad and corn tortilla.

Another option is the Ceviche de Tommy ($20) which is a vaguely disappointing Bay Shrimp Salad, overall rather flavorless but healthy.

The absolute best food in my opinion are the enchiladas ($15). You can choose chicken, my preference, or beef or cheese. My friend Maria says “it’s a deluxe enchilada”. You can also order chilies rellenos, no which you choose any way you can’t go wrong. All are accompanied by rice, beans and a side salads.

Tommy’s serves food typical of the Mexican state of Yucatán. The best of the Yucatecan Cuisine is poc, chuc, and pollo pibil ($17.50) which comes with a lightly spiced red sauce, rice and onions.

The neon sign outside the small entrance to the restaurant provides invokes the bright, light hearted attitude of Tommy’s. The Mexican restaurant lives up to its reputation and provides a fun loving environment ideal for a group of friends to enjoy each other’s company, a great meal making you feel like you are right at home.
