Restaurant Review- Papalote

Restaurant Review by Tara Giddings

A Mexican soccer games brightens up the television screen as lightening brightens up the moody sky outside. Rain falls on the still hot pavement from the sudden change in weather making the patrons inside the restaurant feel as though they are comfortable in a friend’s home.

If you google best burrito in the San Francisco, you’ll get 20 different lists of 20 different burrito places. So which one is the best? Who knows, but I’m here to tell about one that is damm good anyway.

Papalote Mexican Grill was voted one of the top 10 burrito places on of those lists, so now you know its at least as good as about 50 other places in the city. Tasting the chicken burrito will make you believe it. The traditional mole burrito has rice, beans and salsa for $7.95, which in the Bay Area is not too much to pay.

If you want to have a super day then you can order a super burrito by adding sour cream, cheese and guacamole. Since I’m a true California millennial I had to add any form of avocado and I consider it a great life decision. If you’re really into California cuisine  then you can choose one of the vegan beans, whole black, whole pinto or black refried, to go with the vegan rice! Now I’m not that committed to the my state’s new food ideas so I wasn't too worried, but now you have another vegan option besides basically vegetables.

Since the restaurant world is committed to letting people choose every part of their meal, you even have a choice of tortilla! If you’re into that too, then take a look at your options of flour or whole wheat. Let’s not forget that roma tomato and spinach are in there too. (Now that I’m sure is vegan.)

Each addition will make your burrito more of a super price but we all need to splurge on something as delicious as a burrito sometimes. And considering you now know everything about all the ingredients you are dinning in true California style, aside from actually going to the farm and growing your own produce. That costs a fair amount extra, sorry college kids.

The location at 1777 Fulton, near Masonic, makes Papalote a great place for college kids otherwise. The wait for a togo order on a Friday night isn’t too bad at around 15 minutes. If you want to go on a weekday afternoon for lunch then the wait is even shorter.

While you’re sitting on the red stools you can easily chat with friends and even better split more food with friends. In that case I recommend splitting the nachos. Because these are not just some corn chips with cheese, they are an elaborate meal that will make all other nachos insignificant. Of course you have many options here as well but if you get the chips, cheese, retired black beans, mild salsa, chicken and add guacamole for a $10.50 then you will be set for life.

If you’re with a group of friends who are wishing for an all you can eat restaurant and want even more food, this is the time to go for tacos. You can get 2 carne asade, or for those of us who took french in high school: steak, tacos for $6.75. You’ll get corn tortillas, salsa, lettuce, but as we all know guacamole is extra. These deliciously large tacos are happily filling for a very hungry person and easily sharable for two not very hungry people who just need more tacos in their life or a really good way to start a Friday night.

Water is free, but even better you can get a genuine bottle of Mexican coke. Which Coca-Cola experts know tastes better since real sugar is superior to fake sugar. There are a variety of fish tacos, while I can only speak for the pescado fish, which is sautéed in white wine and butter, thats how they got me to spend $8.95. I can only assume they are all equally mouth watering.

So vegan or not, this easily accessible location definitely earns its spot as one of the best burritos  surrounded by a city of judgmental food critics and, delicious, farm to table restaurants. It is another example of how while we Californians may be too hard on the average American’s eating habits we do provide some fantastic food. If you eat here and don't feel the need to say out loud to your friends “I love food” then I’m not sure I can go out to dinner with you.

After you order at the counter with the very polite staff, you can stop in the costumer available restroom and read the inspirational graffiti. “You have to learn to get up from the table when love is not longer being severed” said Nina Simone. Aside from gaining quality life advice, when you eat at Papalote love is definitely being served in the form of great food.
